THE INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS AND ITS APPLICATIONS

NINTH IMA CONFERENCE ON THE MATHEMATICS OF SURFACES

4 - 6 September 2000 Cambridge, UK

Co-sponsored by the British Machine Vision Association

A reception will be held at the conference, kindly sponsored by
Spatial Technology, Three-Space Limited and Unigraphics Solutions

APPLICATION FORM

Computer-based methods for the construction, representation,
and manipulation of complicated surfaces have led to a wide
interest in, and need for, surface mathematics. Many applications
now require the use of surface descriptions, especially in such
fields as computer aided design and machining, and computer vision
and inspection of manufactured parts. The description of surfaces
is also of interest in geographic information systems and multimedia,
and many other areas of science and medicine. This diversity and the
wide range of applicability of the subject have already enabled the
Institute to hold eight successful conferences on the mathematics of
surfaces. The ninth such conference has now been scheduled. Several
international authorities will be presenting invited papers.

The conference will be of interest to a wide audience of mathematicians,

computer scientists, engineers and many others who are already
developing or using computer-based descriptions of surfaces or who wish
to become acquainted with the underlying ideas and potential
applications
of such methods. A key feature will be the interplay of ideas between
the theoreticians in the subject and the users of the techniques.
It is hoped that the conference will stimulate research ideas from
users and developers of surface modelling systems by presentations
of novel problems that may require new theoretical solutions.

Confirmed invited speakers include: O. Faugeras (INRIA, France),
M. Floater (SINTEF, Norway), P. Giblin (Liverpool University),
M.-S. Kim (Seoul National University, Korea), J. Koenderink
(University of Utrecht), N. Patrikalakis (MIT, USA), H. Pottmann
(Technical University of Vienna, Austria), R. Schaback (University
of Gottingen, Germany).

It is hoped to have the proceedings available at the conference,
they will be published by Springer Verlag on behalf of the Institute
of Mathematics and its Applications.

International Programme Committee: A. Blake (Microsoft Research),
M. Bloor (University of Leeds), R. Cipolla (Cambridge University),
R. Farouki (University of California Davis, USA), A. Fitzgibbon
(University of Oxford), H. Hagen (University of Kaiserslautern,
Germany), D. Kriegman (University of Illinois, USA), T. Lyche
(University of Oslo, Norway), R. Martin (Cardiff University),
N. Patrikalakis (MIT, USA), J. Peters (University of Florida, USA),
J. Ponce (University of Illinois, USA), M. Pratt (NIST, USA),
M. Sabin (Numerical Geometry Ltd., Cambridge), L. Schumaker
(Vanderbilt University, USA), C. Taylor (University of Manchester),
W. Triggs (INRIA, France), W. Wang (University of Hong Kong).

Accommodation:
Single study student accommodation is available at Jesus College,
Cambridge in either standard (shared bathroom facilities) or
en-suite (private bathroom) rooms. The College is surrounded by
27 acres of fine gardens, playing fields, tennis and squash courts
and croquet lawns, and is only a few minutes' walk from the centre
of Cambridge. The conference lectures will take place in the
Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge

This event will meet the requirements of the IMA Continuing
Professional Development Scheme.
