In response to the proposed Biomimetics Network, I applied with Julian
Vincent for support of a Structural Morphology Network under the Life
Sciences Interface scheme. It was unsuccessful but I would be pleased to
share experiences of that and be involved with the Biomimetics Network.

Subject: Biomimetics for Sustainable Development: Funding Opportunity
This message is to ascertain the level of support for a funding bid to a
new government initiative for a 'Biomimetics Network'.
The Sustainable Technologies Initiative (STI) has funding of ?15m over the
next five years to support projects which will contribute to sustainable
development and competitiveness. The Government is essentially looking to
boost technologies and supporting infrastructures which improve resource
and energy efficiency and reduce toxin outputs. I can't think of a better
approach to these issues than biomimetics. As a policy analyst and
researcher on sustainable development issues, biomimetics seems to me to be
the major missing piece of the sustainable development jigsaw.
The STI is an ideal opportunity to expand interest in biomimetics research
and practical application, and enhance its profile as a distinct approach
to science and engineering and as ultimately the best way to the
sustainable use of material resources. There are many possible activities
which could be funded, but one option is a Biomimetics Network. 100%
funding of up to ?60,000 is available for networks from the EPSRC, or
unlimited 50% funding from the DTI.
The Network would be aimed at connecting researchers, industry and
financiers, and perhaps other relevant players such as policymakers, in
order to make practical gains in line with the objectives of the STI. I
would think such gains would involve an expans??????????u ? ???
