This is an important appointment for which the Department is seeking someone
who is excited by the prospect of joining a lively and forward-looking
Department with friendly and enthusiastic staff.
Plymouth has a long and distinguished maritime history which has nurtured
scientific study of the marine environment. Today, an international focus
for marine biology is provided by the Plymouth Marine Science Partnership -
which brings together the University of Plymouth with four local
institutions. The Marine Biological Association of the U.K. (MBA) is
recognised as one of the world's premier laboratories for fundamental
studies of marine organisms. We have close links and shared research
facilities, and have recently made the first joint appointment with the MBA
of a Reader in Marine Bioscience. The Centre for Coastal and Marine Studies
(Plymouth Marine Laboratory) is concerned mainly with estuarine and coastal
environmental research; many staff are involved in collaborative research
programmes. The Sir Alistair Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science is a unique
organisation dedicated to the long term studies of plankton and ocean
processes. The National Marine Aquarium, which opened in 1998, is
establishing an active research programme and offers many exciting
opportunities. In addition to the regional focus of expertise, the environs
of Plymouth provide marine biologists with diverse shores and sub-littoral
habitats which are invaluable resources for teaching and research.
Further information about the post is given below, and general information
