Paper proposals are sought for the following panel taking place at the 18th
and 19th-century British Women Writers Conference, hosted by the University
of Kansas in Lawrence, KS (March 15-17, 2001).
Panel title: Conceptions of Pregnancy and Birth in Eighteenth- and
Nineteenth-century Britain.
This panel seeks papers that examine perceptions of childbirth and
pregnancy in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Papers that explore
this topic as it appears in literature, popular and "professional" medical
texts, conduct books, and related ephemera are especially welcome. (The
primary emphasis should be on the culture of birth and pregnancy as opposed
to the cult of motherhood.)
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
--rise of the man-midwife
--illegitimacy and the rise of the Magdalen houses
--birthing practices across class lines
--fictional representations of birth and pregnancy
--birth rates and infant mortality
--birth control and family planning
--the technology of childbirth
--female sexuality and pregnancy/childbirth
Paper proposals should be approximately 300-400 words for 20-minute papers.
E-mail proposals are preferred. Submit to:
