Dave writes,
Could anyone recommend a web-site,
or E-Group, for Vaudeville and Music
Hall Songs?
I've searched high & low, to no avail. There *is* an English Music-Hall
Society, chaired by Roy Hudd, of the BBC ("Huddlines"). I don't know if
they've organised a mailing list, as I suggested Roy they should!
If not, *we* should, Dave!
I'd make a distinction between Music-Hall and Revue, though. Revue and
Music-Hall (England's style) covered what Americans call "vaudeville" (e.g.
a song like "I'll make a man of you" was first sung in a "revue" in London
(pre Great War, incidentally), but sounds exactly like a "music-hall" song.
Sorry for not being so far of help re the London song you mention.
The point about creating a mailing list re music-hall/revue/vaudeville is
rhetorical, of course.
I know how difficult it can be without the proper academic surroundings!
But it IS interesting that, other than *this* distingished list on ballads,
I haven't been able to find one single mailing list devoted to VINTAGE
POPULAR SONGS in the English language.
There doesn't seem to be one for FOLKSONGS either!
I'm not subscribed to any newsgroup nor am I familiar on how they work
(Actually, I don't think I LIKE the way they work). Maybe there is something
on music hall, etc. on the newsgroup line.

The Music Hall Society
The Revue Society
The Folksong Society
AND the Ballad Society!
(also The Hymn Society and the Musical Comedy Society)!
PS. Seriously, I've done informal research on all these different genres!
