I suppose some obvious reference points as far as young singers go (with
modern influences but still definably folky) e.g. Kate Rusby & Eliza
Carthy - but also - from Scotland - bands like Old Blind Dogs (Jim Malcolm
and formerly Ian Benzie), Deaf Shepherd (John Morran), Iron Horse (Annie
Grace) and malinky (Karine Polwart - that's me - and Steve Byrne). Very
different approaches to the material with more or less traditional and
pop/rock influences. Also modern Irish and Irish influenced bands e.g. Solas
(Karan Casey).
None of these are really mainstream but IMO the singers are all influenced
by various forms of popular musics.
Just a small mention that I have also written ballad-influenced songs e.g.
"The Dreadful End of Marianna for Sorcery" appears on malinky's "Last
Leaves" CD.
There's a rewrite (by Edinburgh based poet Janet Fenton) of Betsy Bell and
Mary Gray (Child 243?) which makes it into a bit of a lesbian feminist
anthem and is much sung by women's choirs throughout the UK - only recording
I know by Galloway group Damsel Jam.
Just a few thoughts.
Cheers
Karine Polwart
