Linda:
If I may say so, your refusal to open any message to which the sender has
appended an attachment -- for "safety reasons" -- is over-cautious.
An e-mail message is not an exe or com file. It is merely characters that
we happen to be able to read. Were it to contain a virus or worm, it
would merely be harmless code.
Attachments themselves can be fatal, of course, and like you I do not read
them. But I do read the messages to which they are appended, if only to
tell the sender that if he/she wants me to read the message than he/she
should read it into the body of the message and resend it.
