Overview
In its second year, the sciart Consortium is again inviting applications for awards from partnerships of artists and scientists. The award scheme provides a unique opportunity for scientists and artists to research or to produce projects that reflect contemporary practice in each discipline. These partnerships may involve scientists interested in the creation of new forms of expression, artists inspired by scientific research, or a combination of both. Partnerships with practitioners of all art forms and people working in all fields of science are invited to apply. The finished work should engage the public.
Categories of award
There are two categories for applications and it is envisaged that there will be the following awards:
> up to ten research awards of up to L10 000 each;
> up to two production awards of up to L50 000 each.
Research
Research awards will enable partnerships to explore the early stages of potentially promising proposals. The funds will allow the partnership to research and to develop their initial ideas or hypotheses and within this process to develop a project. Research projects can be tentative, but will have to demonstrate an overall purpose and the methods with which this purpose will be approached. The partnership will have to document the research and the development of their ideas throughout the course of the project. Depending on the conceptual artistic and scientific methods of the project, this development may manifest itself in small productions of, say, a prototype, a publication, a diary, or a series of artworks.
Production
Production awards will be offered to exceptional partnerships that have already undertaken considerable research and have developed their initial ideas. It is, however, understood that continuous development takes place throughout the production of a project. Funds will be awarded to substantial projects whose final shape and means for dissemination have been explored.
Research and Production
How to submit an idea
Please state clearly whether you are applying for a Research or a Production award.
Research and Production applications should contain:
> three pages of text (A4 format);
> three examples of supporting material, that is relevant scientific papers and visual material such as slides, videos, catalogues. It is strongly recommended that you submit up-to-date, high-quality supporting material as part of your application and that you explain the relevance of the material.
Research and Production applications must provide the following information:
> the names, addresses, telephone numbers, places of work and brief CVs of the members of the partnership, one of whom must be identified as the project coordinator to act as sole point of contact for correspondence between the partnership and the sciart Consortium. The project coordinator must sign the application and the budget outline;
> a project title and a 100-word summary of the project;
> reasons why you want to do your project;
> the overall purpose (or purposes) of the project;
> supporting aims that will help you to achieve the overall purpose;
> methods you will use to achieve your supporting aims;
> a plan of work and timescale, including the reports and the meeting, to achieve your supporting aims.
The plan of work should define the main stages involved in researching the project and the anticipated completion date of the project.
The plan of work should also include the timing for the submission of one interim report, one progress meeting and one final report for Research, and two interim progress reports and one final report for Production. This information will be required by the sciart Consortium in order to monitor the partnership?s development of its project. Review meetings with the sciart coordinator will also be arranged.
It is recognized that applications for Production awards will often involve the project?s incorporation into a specific exhibition schedule, festival or location. Where this is the case, applications should include as much relevant information as possible, as well as evidence of advanced discussions with such organizing bodies.
> an itemized budget to achieve each supporting aim;
Please state clearly how much money you are applying for. If relevant, submit a statement of the proportion of funding sought or secured from sources other than the sciart Consortium (if any).
Cost estimates should be submitted under the headings of time, expenses, equipment and miscellaneous costs. If VAT is applicable to any of these costs, it should be indicated as a separate item. Projects that will be part-funded should itemize the proportion of funding to be provided by other sources and by the partnership itself. The sciart Consortium will need to know whether it is being asked to provide top-up, partial or complete funding for a project.
> nominate an individual, organization or charity to which payment will be made;
> provide a statement of the partnership?s and any other relevant party?s rights in the project.
Production
In addition to the information requested above please provide the following:
> details of how the project has been researched and developed to date;
> a plan of work and timescale for further developing and completing the project;
> an indication of the anticipated outcome of the project, and an assessment of its potential significance in the public understanding of art and science;
> evidence that the partnership has the managerial expertise to realize the project and an indication of how it intends to achieve an effective partnership;
> the public dissemination of the project in the UK, including details of host venues or other agencies that have been involved in discussions with the partnership;
> a description of how the partnership intends to reach an audience with the project, how it will be marketed and its target audience. Where appropriate, applications should address how the project may reach international audiences.
Please note
Applications must be in English and must contain the information set out in these guidelines. (Please also refer to the Guidance Notes.)
Projects can have outcomes with educational benefits. However, projects primarily intended for course accreditation or for educational purposes are not eligible.
Partnerships of scientists and artists are eligible to submit ideas for consideration by the sciart Consortium. Employees and members of the governing bodies of any organization in the sciart Consortium and their relatives are not eligible to submit ideas.
Applications should be sent by post to: Bergit Arends, sciart coordinator, based at The Wellcome Trust, 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE.
