Hello Arlis-linkers!
We here at Art and Design (trying very hard to learn)
Learning Resources UK have similar problems with users
being unable to find books on the shelves due to the
confusing amount of print around. With that in mind,
we designed a questionnaire (using lime-green paper of
course!) to ask the users what would help. As a
result, we've now taken the innovative step of putting
our books in order of colour using the "Rainbow
technique" (qv. Larder and Nosewipe: "Books in a hippy
environment" 1967) They range from red, through
orange, yellow, green, blue and indigo, to violet at
the far end of the LR Centre. Books within the same
colour range are then sorted according to size.
On the whole, our users are very happy with this new
arrangement. We get the odd complaint about our
standard enquiry reply ["oh, I remember that one, let
me think... it's a little yellowy-green book... yes,
have a hunt around that shelf"] but then they're the
sort of people who couldn't read the survey, and we
don't want them round our place anyway. As well as the
obvious benefits of colour co-ordination for the
users, it's also rather nice for us working here now,
to shelve and from an aesthetic point of view. Imagine
how you feel when you see a rainbow- well, we see a
huge one every day!
Hope this is of help,
Mavis
ps thanks to those of you who sent messages about
Susie's court case. Holloway's not too far away from
home so at least visits are possible.
