I'm sorry, But I have waited long enough to see if someone else would make
the "correct reply to Richard Schofield's query.
The correct way to flatten a plan is to consult a conservator! [And do not
tell me that Rothschilds can't afford it]. It may be that the plans can
simply be reverse rolled or flattened under weights, but they should be
looked at properly first, and a proper decision made.
Thirty years ago we had little choice but to do thid type of task ourselves
as archivists, and this may still be true for some small underfunded
services. However, this is no excuse for not getting professional advice
form a fellow professional. How can we archivists carp about museums and
library people who think they can "do" archives, if we ourselves do not
respect the professional skills of others.
Hear endeth the Sermon.

If anyone has any bright ideas about how to flatten previously rolled up
maps, beyond sticking them under weighted objects, they would be greatly
appreciated. I have had a message from an amateur archivist who is
threatening to start ironing them. I figured this probably wasn't a great
idea.
Many thanks
