TECHNOLOGY BASELINE SCHEME:
EXTENSION OF THE "FREE MODEMS FOR
MUSEUMS" SCHEME TO ARCHIVES
I am pleased to be able to inform you of a new development to the Resource
Technology Baseline Scheme.
From December 1st, Resource has extended the successful "Free Modems for
Museums" scheme to include UK archives. Archives taking advantage of the
scheme will be able acquire a free modem to explore the internet and
communicate using e-mail. They will be able to explore on-line resources
such as the National Grid for Learning, and keep up to date with archival
issues and advice on best practice through such networks as the archives-nra
discussion list. This project is designed to equip local authority and
specialist archives to a technology baseline, to complete the national
on-line network of provision.
We are announcing the scheme through a number of communication routes, and
obviously, the archives most in need will not receive this message, so I am
asking for your help in bringing this to the attention of any archive that
you feel would benefit.
Due to a limited supply, archives must fulfil the following criteria to be
eligible to receive their free modem: they must be a not-for-profit
organisation, they must be a publicly accessible archive, they must not have
an existing internet connection via modem or fixed line. They can be a local
authority service, and charity or trust, or a private archive, open to the
public. Specifically excluded from this scheme are higher education archives
and for-profit business archives. Archives taking advantage of this scheme
Will receive: a modem plus instructions how to set up their system;
What archives will need: a pc capable of supporting a modem, and an internet
service provider (ISP). Many of these provide free access to the internet
although you will need to pay for the cost of a local telephone call, when
using the service. Full details will be sent with the instructions.
How to receive your modem: To receive a free modem, archives must send a
voucher to the central distribution point. Vouchers are obtainable from
Regional Archives Councils in England, The Scottish Society of Archivists,
the Archives Council Wales, respectively. Archives in Northern Ireland
should contact me directly at Resource. All you need to do is contact your
regional contact listed below to receive your voucher for a free modem! All
we ask is that once you are connected, you e-mail me at Resource with your
new e-mail address so that we may evaluate the take-up of the scheme. Please
note that the contacts listed below should only be contacted in the first
instance for vouchers, and cannot offer assistance on system set-up. If you
have any technical questions, please contact Gordon McKenna of the Museums
Documentation Association, on 01223 315760. I do hope that you will find
this scheme useful and of benefit to your service.
If you have any other enquiries concerning this scheme, please contact me at
