CALM users may find it useful to know that the UNESCO Thesaurus Working
Party, whose members include representives of 23 archival organisations
within the national, university, specialist and local government sectors of
the profession in the UK, together with a number of collaborative projects
(A2A, AIM25, HeHub, CASBAH), is looking toward the national development of a
subject thesaurus based on the UNESCO Thesaurus, which could be added to and
which would be available on-line.
At present, the Working Party and UKNDAD, with the support of the NCA, are
in the process of submitting a bid for a project to develop the UNESCO
Thesaurus along these lines, and to enable a national editorial function
which will underpin such development.
The UNESCO Thesaurus is realised by members of the Working Party to be high
level, in need of structural development with reference to particular
subject areas, and in need of development for UK usage. Indeed, the issues
already raised by members of the Working Party are mirrored in the concerns
detailed here by CALM Users. If the bid for funding is successful, these
issues will be given immediate consideration.
Anyone interested in the deliberations of the UNESCO Thesaurus Working Party
should contact Charles Tattersall (secretary) at

The Working Party is also represented as a stakeholder on HILT, the 1year
project supported by RSLP looking into the feasibility of a high level
cross-sectoral subject thesaurus.
