Colleagues may be interested in the following conference to be organised by
the London Archives Users Forum at the Institute of Historical Research on
Saturday 4 November.
Divine guidance: records of religious bodies and how to use them
The London Archive Users' Forum's 13th annual conference reflects the
importance that religion has played in the metropolis over the centuries. St
Paul's and Westminster Abbey, of course, demonstrate the central place that
London has long had in the affairs of the nation. Londoners have long
worshipped in a variety of ways. They have brought their faiths with them as
they moved to the capital to seek their fortune. No better example exists
than the mosque in Brick Lane that began life in the 18th century as a
Huguenot chapel, and became a synagogue serving the newly arrived Jewish
residents a hundred or so years later.
These faiths have left a wealth of records, documenting not just the births,
marriages and deaths of members of their communities, but also their growth,
their buildings, and the support offered to co-religionists. Speakers, at
the conference will describe records in their archives and how historians -
professional or amateur -can use them. They include: Michael Gandy talking
about Catholic records, Tony Trowles on records of Westminster Abbey, and
Gordon Taylor on sources for the Salvation Army.
Tickets are £20 (£16 for LAUF members) including a buffet lunch. For more
