Len,
Yes , things have changed. They do you know, particularly over a period of
20 odd years.

If Ms Helen Wakely is to be believed I must assume that the membership of
the SRG has changed dramatically. When it first started I was Group
Archivist at P:ilkington plc, and was told specifically that the SRG was not
intended for business archivists. If I felt a need to talk to people I had
the Business Archives Council umbrella to shelter under. When British
Archives (the book) was due to be published one of the authors told me that
they didn't want Business archives listed in their publication becausethey
were mostly too lightweight and anyway they had enough entries.
Unlike others I didn't take offence, and unusally for me didn't attack them
because their attitude was old and fuddy-duddy (and I'm thinking of people
who were younger than I).
Jeannette's new group is an excellent idea, and it is right to call it the
business records (underline) group. The largest collection of business
records in this country is not held in any corporate institution. They are
held collectively in county and city record offices and make a very positive
contribution towards the national archives policy which some of us think are
important.
For heavens sake, stop being so petty. Go out and meet other archivists at
regional meetings and perhaps discuss the promotion of your business records
with other (forward-looking) professionals.
