Speaking as a chronic non-goer to regional events, perhaps the reason for
non-attendance is that they have become/are perceived as more social than
'useful' events. I do at least plan to go to London events if there is an
interesting speaker or topic of discussion. But, to be honest, after a long
and stressful day at work the last thing I want is to socialise with other
archivists and talk (more or less) about work. I love my job and I enjoy it
(most of the time) but I like time off as well. Besides, archivists en
masse worry me (as do most professional groups - no insult intended).
Would it be an idea to replace regional events/run alongside some kind of
regional discussion lists? Papers could be posted up and regional issues
debated. I for one am more likely through sheer laziness to post a question
on a list than go to a meeting, ask it and stay for coffee afterwards. Of
course, this doesn't stop people getting together for formal of informal
meetings if they want to.
Just another Friday afternoon suggestion. And yes, I do plan on getting
grumpier and more anti-social with age.
