Sarah Henning, British Records Association Archivist since 1996, has been
successful in obtaining the post of archivist at the Society of
Genealogists. We wish Sarah well in her new role and the very best for the
future, and take this opportunity to thank her for her personal
contribution to the BRA and its Records Preservation Section over the past
4 years.
Therefore we are advertising for a new archivist to take on this
challenging role. The following advert has appeared in the latest Career
Opportunities. We have already received a number of enquiries but please
forward details to anyone who might be interested in applying for this
post. Susan Snell or Sarah Henning would be delighted to talk to anyone
interested in applying for this post (Sarah 020 7833 0428).
There have been two recent articles about the work of the BRA and its
Records Preservation Section in the BRA's journal Archives (vol 24 no 101
Oct 1999) & the Society of Archivists' Journal (JSA vol 19 no 2 1998) that
provide useful background information about the unique role it undertakes
in the archive world.
This is a challenging but exciting time for the BRA archivist - for
example, 5 cubic metres of records will soon be repatriated from the
Library of Congress in America, requiring careful sorting and despatch to
repositories from late October. The role of the present archivist has grown
to include helping to compile the BRA newsletter, organising training
events, writing the BRA web pages, co-ordinating the Title Deeds Working
Party with the Society of Archivists (including reps from the legal
profession, archivists and a legal academic), so there is scope to develop
the role and to make it as interesting and challenging as the new
postholder wishes.
The job offers a unique opportunity, especially for a newly qualified
archivist, to liaise between both archivists and depositors of newly
discovered records. While advice is on hand from the RPS Chair and other
BRA honorary officers, it offers the chance to develop at one's own pace
and to take forward initiatives.
