To add to the Newsletter debate, let me just make one or two radical points:
Anyone who has seen the Museums Journal will both be highly impressed by its
glossy format, and its wealth of general culture sector info, on lottery
developments, etc. I often pick things up from MJ which have not reached me
from SoA sources - and that implies no criticism whatever of the society or
its newsletter. What I am saying is that MJ is useful reading for
archivists.
Now then, following on from that, do we need an independent Newsletter?
Could we not share MJ with our museum colleagues? Would they welcome an
archives section? Would they like 1500 + additional names on their
circulation list? Does their advertising mean that MJ is in effect free? If
it does, does that mean that SoA could save money by not producing a
separate monthly newsletter? But would this identify us as 'objects' people
rather than 'info' people? Would it upset relations with the LA...or what
about sharing their Record instead?
These are just a few issues that could be raised, and I'm not forcasting the
conclusion of any such considerations, but at times we should co-operate
rather than insist on paddling our own canoe, if it suits everyone. The only
essential I would like to see specified would be that the Society would not
lose its identity in the publication; and we would still need the input of
our editorial team into any joint publication - and perhaps their labours
merit a glossier, more colourful result in any case, if only we could afford
it.
