Dear Kathryn
I thought you might like information on Gloucestershire Record Office's
copying charges and policies. All photocopying is done on A3 sheets,
allowing a copyright message to be attached to the bed of the copier.
Copies on this machine cost 30p when made by the customer, or 50p if made by
staff on their behalf. There is no handling charge, although postage is
extra.
Microform copying is on two digital laser reader/printers, where the actual
cost of the copy is quite high. Accordingly, copies cost 50p when made by
the customer, and £1.00 if supplied by staff. In this case there is no
copyright notice on the machines, so copies can be made at either A4 or A3
size. Again there is no handling charge.
No differentiation is made between original documents and reference volumes,
although the usual common sense rules apply. Thus where a volume is too
large or tightly bound to be copied we may send customers to the local
library in cases where we know that a version of the book is held there
which can be copied.
For interest, the local studies library currently charges 10p for A4 copies
on site, 15p for A3, and 60p for customer copies off the reader/printer.
These copies also apply for copies made by staff for people in
Gloucestershire. For postal customers outside the county their charge is
50p for all photocopies, and £1.50 for reader/prints (these prices include
postage).
Neither with us nor the library is there a sliding scale of charge for the
cost of copies dependent upon the customer's social standing. However our
Archive Education Officer can provide cut price copies to schools within the
county which subscribe into his service (but this, I suspect, is another
story!).
I hope this helps.
