BASTD WORKSHOPS
14th September 2000

The BASTD Workshops have been developed as a more in-depth treatment of the
main themes of theBASTD Introductory Course. Participants will be able to
practice their skills in small groups led by an experienced professional.
The emphasis will be on participative learning: those attending can bring
along examples of challenges they have encountered in processing archives
(both paper and other media), records management and computerisation. There
will also be plenary sessions for discussion and structured debate as well
as an introduction to the wider archival world. A longer lunch hour, a small
number of participants and a venue which offers good spaces for break-out
groups gives the atmosphere and flexibility for those attending to get to
know each other and make lasting contacts. This is expected to be a very
enjoyable and beneficial day. NB we need 15 participants to run this course,
so book early and avoid disappointment.

All workshops will be 2 hours and 15 minutes, with a break in the middle.
Groups will be small so participants are expected to contribute actively and
may be required to do some advance preparation.

Venue: The Meeting Place, 153 Drummond Street, London NW1 2PB

Cost: £90, includes lunch and refreshments. There is a £15 discount for
participants in theBASTD Introductory Courses.

10.00-12.15 First workshop session (choose A or B)

Arrangement and Listing of Archival Materials (Workshop A)
Participants will have the chance to analyse the arrangement of a small
archive group and move on from that to begin to describe it. Reference will
be made to appropriate standards and a selection of finding aids will be
available for participants to examine.

Processing Non-Paper Archives (Workshop B)
This workshop will cover the particular challenges of processing and
describing audio and video cassettes, film and photographs in archives.
Emphasis will be given to practical examples and appropriate standards.

12.15-13.45 Lunch
13.00-13.45 Palaeography Surgery (For those participants that have the
enthusiasm and stamina, we are offering an informal paleography class.

develop their paleographic skills. Includes background and tips for further
reading.)

Appraisal and Retention Scheduling (Workshop C)
Faced with a mass of documentation it is hard to know what to keep and what
to discard. Participants will be given guidelines on appraisal and the
various factors which determine retention periods to equip them to develop
their own retention policies. This will be followed up by an exercise which
gives the opportunity to appraise records according to an existing retention
schedule.

Making the Most of Automation (Workshop D)
Explore the opportunities offered by modern technology in your working
environment. This workshop will give participants the chance to analyse
archival functions and map them across to automated systems.
