The Joint UK Funding Councils also published a statement on
safeguarding good scientific practice in 1998 which states:
'Primary data as the basis for publications should be
securely stored for an appropriate time in a durable form
under the control of the institution of their origin.' This
applies to social science research data as well. The
statement does not, however, specify what an 'appropriate
time' is.
I would also be very interested to hear from others about
common/best practice in the semi-current retention (rather
than permanent preservation for re-use) of social science
data, whether qualitative or quantitative, and to hear of
any other guidelines from authorities that might carry
weight amongst academics! I think that the JISC Study of
the Records Life-Cycle recommends 5 years for all types of
research data but I have no idea how they arrived at this.
Best,
Jenny.
