I would be grateful to hear from colleagues who have or know the whereabouts of copies of the
questionnaires which were completed by schools in England and Wales in the Schools’ Census
conducted by the Department of Education and Science in 1975, 1977, 1978 and 1979.
The Schools' Census is a data gathering exercise conducted by the DfEE and its predecessors in
January of each year, through questionnaires which are sent to LEA-maintained schools via their LEAs
(non-LEA schools, e.g. independent schools, receive the forms directly from the DfEE). We are trying
to trace examples of the forms which were sent to schools in the above the years as this will assist the
processing of datasets for the Schools' Census which have been transferred to the UK National Digital
Archive of Datasets (http://ndad.ulcc.ac.uk/). Ideally, we are looking for copies of the different types of
forms which were sent to primary, middle, secondary, special, independent and nursery schools. Forms
can be either completed or blank: we are interested in the forms themselves rather than their contents.
It is possible that LEA records (e.g. in county record offices) may include blank forms or duplicates of
completed forms. Alternatively, copies may survive in the records of individual schools. The DfEE itself
has not been able to trace any Schools' Census questionnaires pre-1990.
