I was recently handed a large Victorian notebook and was asked whether I
could find an appropriate record office to accept it. It was apparently
compiled by one John Tanswell, of Inner Temple, London, in the years
following 1855 - and it contains his extensive and industrious researches
into the Tanswell/Tazewell family, mainly in the form of "various copies of
deeds, grants, armorial bearings, wills and parish registers". According to
the prospective donor, it was later discovered in Hounslow in 1941 during a
waste paper salvage drive - and was thereupon promptly rescued by a party
of Boy Scouts - presumably all intent on doing their "Good Deed For The
Day".
Looking through the pages, the family was apparently quite well-to-do. But
they seem to have been associated with such a bewildering variety of places
- including Buckland Newton, Dorset; Limington, Somerset; Canterbury;
various London parishes and Newington in Surrey - that it is difficult for a
non-specialist to know where best to offer it. Accordingly, if anyone
recognises this particular family - or otherwise knows of a suitable
repository - perhaps they could let me know. Thank you.
