TEMPORARY ASSISTANT ARCHIVIST/ARCHIVIST
Scale 5 £15210 - £16719
Four Months Duration (September - December 2000)
Funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board - Research Exchange Scheme
Lancashire Record Office and the University of Salford are collaborating to
prepare a model User Guide to 20th century Asylum records deposited in the
County Record Office at Preston. The Guide will serve as an exemplar for
similar records throughout the country. The archivist appointed will develop
the guide under the supervision of the County Archivist, with the active
participation of Prof. Pat Garside of Salford University.
We are looking for an archivist, possibly recently qualified but certainly
enthusiastic, to carry out this work. The post will be based at the
Lancashire Record Office, and will be for 4 months starting in early
September. Salary will be on local authority Scale 5, (£15210 - £16680)
depending on experience.
The 20th century asylum records at Preston have been deposited over a
considerable period and represent one of the best collections of this type
in England. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with both academics
and archivists to enhance access to important and largely under-utilised
material, while applying archival techniques to a complex group of records.
For informal discussion of the post contact Bruce Jackson, County Archivist.
(tel. 01772 263026 or [log in to unmask]) or Patricia Garside,
Professor of Contemporary Social History (tel. 0161 295 3297 or
[log in to unmask])
Closing date for applications is Friday 28 July, with interviews at Preston
on Tuesday 15 August.
Application forms are available from the Personnel Services Team, PO Box 61,
County Hall, Preston, PR1 8RJ (tel. 01772 261607). Please quote Job
