APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
THE ASVIN PROJECT WORKSHOP-"Collection Development Policies and electronic
information resources in the twenty-first century"
REMINDER- FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT
In the 'Information Age' collection development policies help to guide
institutions in their acquisition of stock to meet the needs for study,
teaching and research. Adopting a collection policy will also allow a
library to make the most effective use of a limited acquisitions budget
A half day workshop to be held in the Brenda Moon Room, Edinburgh
University Main Library on the 12th April 2.00 - 5.00 pm (the day before
the AHIS Conference). Please note that the venue is Edinburgh University
and not the Royal (Dick) Vet School as originally advertised.
The ASVIN (Assessing and Supporting Veterinary Information Needs) Project
(http://www.asvin.ac.uk) funded by the Research Support Libraries
Programme(RSLP) has found that only a handful of the libraries they
visited have a formal Collection Development Policy.

Michael Breaks will start off the workshop by giving an overview of the
principles and theories of a collection development policy. Using his
experience as a University Librarian at Heriot Watt University he will
outline some of the national issues and recent initiatives in Higher
Education. He will also discuss the increasing importance of electronic
sources of information, particularly the JISC supported Distributed
National Electronic Resource (DNER), which aims to improve information
provision to staff and students in the HE sector.
Stuart James, the Librarian at Paisley University, will then follow by
giving his view of collection development policies from the perspective of
a small university. Stuart and his university are, however, involved in a
number of initiatives in Southwest Scotland, which aim to improve services
to users in the area. The University is also involved in a number of
outreach activities that require careful management of stock, and this
experience will be of great interest to delegates who have responsibilities
for multi-site libraries. He will also indicate how the electronic age is
allowing him to increase the number of journals to which the university
subscribes, although spending substantially less.
Morag Nisbet, Head of Scientific, Technical and Environmental Information
at the Scottish Science Library (SSL), part of the National Library of
Scotland, will then offer a few thoughts about the SSL's collection
development policy. The SSL, unlike the two previous libraries mentioned
today, has a responsibility to Scotland as a whole, rather than to a small
or well-defined group of users. The SSL has responsibilities to the library
users of the future, as much as to today's users. It therefore needs to
support subjects which are significant to Scotland, ranging from the
high-tech industries to ecology.
The afternoon will conclude with groups of 6-8 delegates reviewing some of
the information gleaned by the speakers, and perhaps introducing their own
experiences in the field of collection development. Groups will then
report back their findings to the main workshop. The ASVIN team will then
explore and develop the feedback, on behalf of the delegates attending the
workshop during the next stage of Project and then present them with a
written report.
A buffet lunch will be provided free of charge prior to the workshop.
(would those wishing to attend please notify me if they wish to attend the
buffet and if they have any special dietary needs). There is still time
to sign up to the workshop if you have not already done so. If you wish to
attend, please contact Alex Stutz or a member of the project team at: 0171
