APOLOGIES FOR CROSS POSTING
Preliminary announcement
In the 'Information Age' collection development policies help to guide
institutions in their acquisition of stock to meet the needs for study,
teaching and research. Adopting a collection policy will also allow a
library to make the most effective use of a limited acquisitions budget
THE ASVIN PROJECT WORKSHOP-"Collection Development Policies and electronic
information resources in the twenty-first century"
A half day workshop to be held at The Royal (Dick) Veterinary School,
Edinburgh University on the 12th April 2.00 - 5.00 pm (the day before the
AHIS Conference).
The ASVIN (Assessing and Supporting Veterinary Information Needs) Project
(http://www.asvin.ac.uk) funded by the Research Support Libraries
Programme(RSLP) has found that only a handful of the libraries that they
visited have a formal Collection Development Policy.
WORKSHOP SPEAKERS
Stuart James Librarian (Paisley University)
Michael Breaks Librarian (Heriot-Watt University)
Morag Nisbet Librarian (National Library of Scotland)
Michael will talk about collection development principles and then a
'top-down' view of consortia eg SCURL (The Scottish Confederation of
University and Research Libraries), JISC (Joint Information Systems
Committee) etc. Stuart will then outline his experience at his own
library, also looking at SCURL developments etc but from the 'bottom-up'
perspective. Morag will describe the Scottish Science Library's collection
development policy
A buffet lunch will be provided free of charge prior to the workshop. We
would therefore be grateful if you could indicate whether you will be
attending by contacting Alex Stutz or a member of the project team at: 0171
