Thank you Sarah for pointing out that the description of the list on
the web page was out of date. It is being amended to reflect the
introductory file which is sent out to new members, and states that
the primary purpose of the list is to facilitate discussion of all
aspects of archival work in the UK.
For those who are interested, the following is a note on the
Archives and Internet Group as it disappears from view:
The Archives and Internet Group was an informal one, dating back
to 1994, when University archivists were preparing bids for the
Follett funding round and issues of mounting information about
archives on-line were under consideration for the first time. The
Group was initially convened by Louise Craven and Una O'Sullivan
(then both at HMC); I took over later. It had a lively existence for a
few years but outlived its purpose and was wound up last year.
Una established this list as a means of communication for the
Group in February 1995, using the Mailbase infrastructure which
was already in place. At the time access to email was largely
limited to the HE sector. Since the list was seen to be fulfilling a
useful purpose, it was decided to widen access to the whole
archival community. We are grateful to Mailbase for allowing so
many members from outside HE.
The list is an open channel of communication managed by
volunteer owners. It has no formal links with the Society of
Archivists, though all four co-owners are members of the IT Sub-
Committee. Over five and a half years membership has grown from
the initial twenty or so to 800.
