Archivist/Cataloguer (Photographs)
Salary Scale £18,500 to £24,500 plus London allowance £2,134
We are looking for a suitably qualified and experienced person to sort, arrange
and catalogue a large collection of missionary photographs held in the Library of
the SOAS. The post is for two years and forms part of a collaborative project,
“Missionary Collections in the UK: a project to facilitate and improve access”,
funded by the Research Support Libraries Programme. Appointment will be at a
point on the Academic Related Scale 2, according to qualifications and
experience.
The photographic collections consist of more than 20,000 photographs of
considerable ethnographic and historical interest. The successful candidate will
be responsible for arranging, sorting and cataloguing them, using the Archives
and Manuscripts Division’s CAIRS-TMS automated system, and in taking
measures to improve their packaging and storage. The post-holder will be
expected to become knowledgeable about the collections, answer enquiries about
them and promote their use.
Candidates should have a good honours degree, with a post-graduate
qualification in archive administration, or other appropriate qualification or
experience. Good cataloguing and IT skills are required as well as experience of
database construction and/or digitisation. The successful candidate will be well-
organised, an effective communicator, capable of working independently and as
part of a team. A knowledge of photographic history and/or colonial history is
extremely desirable.
