YES! We at Nottinghamshire Archives have experienced similar increases which we
put down to local factors such as our open day (attended by around 450) and 50th
anniversary events last year and people getting to know that we hold the GRO
indexes. However, we also wondered if programmes like Bloodties and Breaking
the Seal as well as the recent Daily Mail series on family history has had
anything to do with it. We have had a great increase in new users who seem not
to have visited any record office before and mostly doing family history,
though house historians are starting to figure as well. We have had well over
100 people every Tuesday this year and Saturday mornings which were previously
fairly quiet have started to attract over 50 visitors. I also tend to blame THE
MILLENNIUM for all the village histories going on at the moment.
Whatever next? "Archives: The Docusoap"?
