Dear all,
I didn't think I had been born in a particularly 're-constructed' country
but I must say that, in Spain, archivists are 'archiveros' or 'archiveras'
(sometimes having male and female nouns comes in handy...) without any
equivalents for love, boi, cont, darling, dear, pet... Cardigans are also
common in some repositories and I heard of a monk trying to relocate some
records underneath his habit.
I think that the profession was perceived as a female one in Spain. I'd say
more, information managers and records managers tend to be male (the IT
connexion, I'm afraid...) whilst there are more women archivists.
I do remember a sort of joke... Some years ago a group of colleagues in
Spain used to called the profession 'La Cuerpa' ('The Body of Archivists
using the female suffix, insted of the generic but male suffix 'El
Cuerpo').
One question on another summer subject... do you have a patron saint for the
archivist profession here in the UK? I recently learnt from 'Arxiforum',
distribution list for Spanish speaking archivists, that Saint Benedict (11
or 12 July) was our patron...
Well, this thread has finally made me come out. I should have sent a more
serious first e-mail to the list but...
