There are national figures in the Public Service Quality Group's Survey of
Visitors to British Archives, 1998.
They give 61% or 63% (text and pie chart) of visitors studying family
history.
12% of all visitors (around 1 million in total) come from abroad, 9%
travel over 100 miles in the UK, and 24% travel 20-100 miles in the UK.
They estimate a minimum of 100,000 overnight stays by overseas visitors.
My guess is that a much higher proportion of these are family history
visits, and if you add UK nationals likely to stay overnight, then a quite
conservative estimate would bring the figure to around 100,000 overnight
genealogical stays nationally.
