My 9 year old is intrigued with the hypothesis broached on a US-PBS or
Discovery Channel show regarding the "Baghdad battery" being potentially
used for electroplating that he wanted to look at that as as possible
science fair project.
The batteries are no real issue (and we have looked at a number of
resources including the materials relating to a possible briton battery
dating to Roman times) but the electroplating part of theproject has
already become a bit daunting, with my son having now checked out books
about current electroplating processes which all rely on CN baths.
We have searched the archives of this list and located some references
from the late 19th century but nothing that perhaps is rudimentary
enought to serve our purposes. We have spent some time loooking for
information on the web, but with the growth of the net it is difficult
to work through 100,000 sites advising that they offer the best
electroplate commodities in the west, etc. ;=}.
What we really need to locate are texts, bibliographies, etc. that would
offer more of an idiot's guide to electroplating..... a presentation of
crude and simple ways to demonstrate metal tranference and adhesion with
what one might find at hand (such as one might have developed to
introduce the concept).
If anyone knows of such materials we would appreciate hearding about it.
thank you.
