Dave and Gerry,
I am hoping that you have made a slight mistake with typing here. I
certainly do not claim 10,000 furnaces at Low Birker, nor even 10,000 tons
of slag. Rather what we do have - based on physical evidence (excavation)
and remote sensing are 22 furnace locations, each of which has the remains
of multiple furnaces. This is an awlful lot of furnaces for our time
period, c. AD 1000, but certianly not 10,000.
