Can't remember where I read it - but came across a glib comment that
the Arab (I think) practice of plunging heated steel swords into the
bodies of captured slaves (presumably alive), in order to quench the
metal to the correct temper, effectively generated a nitrided steel
surface throught the decomposition of body fluids and subsequent
diffusion of nitrogen!! Both the practice and outcome may well be pure
myth but I thought it worth a mention :)
