I´m Anders Soderberg, archaeologist and new to this list.
I´ve tried myself melting copper-alloys (mainly tin-bronze) using (irish) peat as a substitute for charcoal. It worked splendidly, though I can´t tell if it worked better my impression is that it clearly worked just as well as charcoal for the purpose. If I should estimate the temperatures in these experiments (unfortunately I didn´t use any pyrometer at the time), I would say I very well reached the aquired levels of 1100-1140 degrees C.
