at the risk of overstepping my limited knowledge:
Here in North America at least, machine made cut nails very quickly
replaced hand forged nails. The limiting factor on the spread of machine
nails was mostly the development of transportation nets that could ship
them.
There is a company STILL in opperation in Wareham - New England. called the
'Treemont Nail Company' that is I believe the oldest continuing cut nail
operation in North America. Their address is:
