I'm currently looking for parallels for a pair of composite bronze and iron
tongs that were discovered during antiquarian investigations of a
multi-period broch in the north of Scotland. At present, there is no
indication of the objects date and current views believe they can be dated
no better than between the Iron Age or Medieval period. Other objects from
the site date to between circa 200BC to AD1000. There are also a number of
Roman exotic finds from the investigations.
The object consists of a curved bronze plate, which forms the tongs
framework, and two iron plates which are rivetted on the lower part to form
the actual grasping tongs (picture in Prehistoric Remains of Caithness by S
Laing 1866, 28).
Any help greatly appreciated
Cheers
Andy
