Of those two options I wonder why you chose cadmium. From my reading I would
have thought it much more likely that ancient gold contained silver and
copper. You don't say how large this item is to justify your comment on its
homogeneity.
As an example I quote from Metals by C.L. Bloxam "Native gold always
contains silver, and generally copper, but in very variable proportions,
though gold from the same district has commonly the same composition". If
the method you are using cannot positively distinguish between cadmium and a
mixture of copper and silver you are not going to be able to determine
whether this is genuine or not.
