Several exciting opportunities currently exist at the Office for National
Statistics' Newport site due to expansion. There are new vacancies for
both Statistical Methodologists and Statisticians of varying levels of
experience and qualification. The closing date for applications is 30th

The posts offer you the chance to join a team that produces key data about
the UK's economic and social health. You will have the opportunity to
apply your strong statistical abilities and organisational skills to expand
and improve the quality of economic statistics.

Starting salary, dependent on level of appointment, qualifications and
esperience, will be in the range of £15k to £35k but could be more for
exceptional candidates. In addition to a competitive salary, benefits

Statistical Methodologists - Business Survey Methodology division. Several
posts available are at several levels:
trainee methodologists - recent graduates and final year undergraduates -
£15k to £19k.
methodologists - £17k to £27k.
senior/principal methodologists - £24k to £35k.
The opportuntiy is to play a pivotal role in a team of specialists
providing methological support for business surveys by reviewing current
methods, researching alternatives and devising practical solutions.
Statisticians - Economic Statistics Directorate. Again there are several
posts available at several levels:
statisticians - candidates with up to four years' experience, inculding
final year undergraduates - £15k to £23k.
senior statisticians - £27k to £35k.
The opportunity is to be instrumental in the provision of key high profile
series such as the Retails Sales Index, Producer Price Index and Index of
Production. For senior posts you will assume overall responsibility for a
major economic series, managing the process of producing regular statistics
and planning and implementing developmental work.
For some posts, you will manage projects right through from establishing
requirements to production of final reports, employing and adapting modeern
statistical techniques to maximise quality and efficiency.
The precise requirements for posts vary but you will need to demonstrate:
Excellent statistical skills, including at least a 2:1 degree in statistics
or other closely related subject with strong statistical component.
Proven experience in/aptitude for analysing statistics and presenting
statistical results.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Knowledge of statistical computing software, including ideally SAS.
For more senior Statistician posts, good management skills are essential.
For Methodologist posts, a deeper knowledge of statistics will be expected.
