Centre for Drug Misuse Research, University of Glasgow
Two positions are available within a research project which will provide
estimates of the prevalence of problem drug use at the local and national
level across Scotland using the capture-recapture method. With this method,
data from a range of agencies (including drug treatment agencies and the
Police) are collated and analysed with log-linear modelling regression
models.
RESEARCH FELLOW (STATISTICS)
The statistician will be responsible for the descriptive analysis of the
collated data on the ‘known’ drug using population and the
capture-recapture analysis to provide estimates of the size of the ‘hidden
population’. The post holder will be required to prepare draft reports
describing the results by Health Board / Local Authority area.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have a postgraduate
qualification in statistics or will have substantial quantitative data
analysis experience. Experience of log-linear modelling, particularly with
GLIM, is preferred. Knowledge of drug misuse issues is also preferred.
DATA MANAGER
The data manager will be responsible for the development of a database
collating data on drug misuse in Scotland. Although some of the data will
have been collected and entered by other members of the research team, the
Data Manager will be required to import data from a range of data sources.
You will therefore, when required, visit agencies across Scotland, possibly
overnight. You will be required to prepare draft reports describing the
collated data by Health Board / Local Authority area.
Experience in the design and management of databases, preferably using
Excel or Access is required. Experience in record linkage techniques is
preferred, particularly using data such as initials and dates of birth or
soundex codes. A knowledge of drug misuse issues is also preferred.
