Dear colleagues,
We are currently advertising the following postdoctoral position in
statistics. Please feel free to contact me for further information. With
apologies for cross-postings.
Best regards,
Mark.
UNIVERSITY OF KENT AT CANTERBURY
INSTITUTE OF MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN STATISTICS
A Research Associate (RA1A) post in Statistics in the
Institute of Mathematics and Statistics at the
University of Kent at Canterbury is available from
1st September 2000 or such a date as may be arranged.
In particular, the position is aimed at undertaking research
in spatial statistics with the newly appointed Professor Mark Steel.
The latter research will involve the development of statistical models
for (marked) point pattern data and Bayesian inference procedures
for dealing with substantive applications to environmental problems.
As both the theoretical complexity of the models involved and the
size of the available data make such applications quite challenging,
particular emphasis will be on efficient computational algorithms and
implementations, using e.g. recently developed Markov chain Monte
Carlo methods. Issues of model choice and model uncertainty will
be investigated in detail.
The successful applicant will be expected to have a strong
research potential and an enthusiasm for developing both
theoretical work and serious applications. This appointment will
be for a fixed term of two years.
The successful candidate will ideally have a Ph.D. in statistics
or a related field. Previous experience in working with spatial
models or environmental data will be valued. Familiarity with
computers and some exposure to modern computational methods is
certainly important, but a strong theoretical background might partly
compensate for that.
Informal enquiries should be directed to Mark Steel, who is
currently still at the University of Edinburgh, and can be reached at
