University of Warwick Department of Statistics
Life expectancy of children with cerebral palsy: A UK collaborative study
Research Fellowship: 3 Years
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on a Medical
Research Council Health of the Public project held by Dr Jane Hutton and
Emeritis Professor Peter Pharoah (Public Heath, University of Liverpool).
The project involves extending statistical methodology and analysing data
of major importance to the NHS and society.
The methodological objectives are:
1. To extend statistical methods for modelling survival data with
heterogeneity, measurement error, missing and mis- classified data to
accelerated life regression models, and to write computer programmes to
implement these methods.
2. To compare these models with proportional hazards regression models.
The public health objectives are to investigate regional and temporal
variation in survival, allowing for severity of disability. People with
cerebral palsy (CP) are major users of health and social services:
cerebral palsy is the most common cause of severe physical disability in
children. A collaboration of UK CP six registers provides a data set of
6000 people, which is the basis of this study.
The Department of Statistics, University of Warwick, is one of the
strongest research departments of its kind in the UK. Several staff and
research students work in survival analysis. Peter Pharoah is a
paediatric epidemiologist of international renown. He and nine
collaborators will provide clinical, health service and consumer
expertise.
Applicants should have a higher degree, preferably a PhD, in a relevant
area of statistics. Informal enquiries should be directed to Dr Jane L
Hutton, Department of Statistics, University of Warwick, Coventry, CV4 7AL.
