STATISTICIAN or EPIDEMIOLOGIST
As part of the Cardiovascular Health Strategy of the Department of
Health and Children in Ireland
(http://www.doh.ie/publications/cardiac.html) the above position has
been created to study the impact of the strategy on healthcare,
particularly drug use. Applied research in the medical sciences is
increasingly dependent on the use of computational methods for data
management, interpretation and translation into clinically relevant
information. Candidates for this permanent position should have a
postgraduate degree and relevant experience in Statistics or
quantitative Epidemiology.
Cardiovascular disease, particularly heart attack, heart failure and
stroke are the commonest cause of death in Ireland. Part of the
remit of the multi-disciplinary team, physicians, pharmacists,
nurses, statisticians, health economists is to determine whether
appropriate patients are receiving appropriate therapy and to this
end will work closely with the National Centre for Pharmacoeconomics
at St. James' Hospital and with Dr. Alan Kelly, SAHRU, Trinity
College, Dublin (http://www.tcd.ie/Community_Health/SAHRU/index.html))
The research will involve the use of large databases of drug
prescribing in the community and in hospitals and subsequently
relating these to morbidity/mortality data. The impact of the
initiatives in the Health Strategy will also be studied. There is a
strong research/audit component to this position.
St. James's Hospital (http://www.stjames.ie) is the largest teaching
hospital in Ireland with a full range of Cardiological and vascular
services. It is anticipated that the successful applicant will have
an academic appointment to Trinity College, Dublin
