FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ministry of
Education and Science of Ukraine, National Taras Shevchenko
University of Kyiv, and Ukrainian Mathematical Society
organize a Congress of Mathematicians that will be held
in Kyiv from August 21 to August 23, 2001.
The Congress will be conducted in honour of the famous
Ukrainian mathematician M. V. Ostrogradsky in connection
with 200th anniversary of his birthday.

Mathematics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine)
Scientific Program
It is planned to devote the first day of work of the
Congress to plenary lectures. They will focus, chiefly,
on the works of M.V. Ostrogradsky that most notably
influenced the development of Mathematics and Mechanics.
The main work of the Congress will be conducted in the
following parallel sections:
1. Algebra and Number Theory (Chairman A. V. Roiter)
2. Dynamical Systems (Chairman O. M. Sharkovsky)
3. Differential Equations and Nonlinear Oscillations
(Chairman A. M. Samoilenko)
4. Complex Analysis and Potential Theory (Chairman

5. Mathematical Physics (Co-chairmen A. G. Nikitin
and D. Ya. Petryna)
6. Teaching Methods and History of Mathematics
(Co-chairmen O. M. Bogolyubov, M. I. Shkil,
M. I. Yadrenko)
7. Nonlinear Analysis (Chairman I. V. Skrypnik)
8. Computational Mathematics and Mathematical
Problems in Mechanics (Co-chairmen V. M. Koshlyakov,
I. O. Lukovsky, V. L. Makarov, I. V. Sergienko)
9. Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics
(Co-chairmen V. S. Korolyuk and M. I. Portenko)
10. Approximation Theory (Co-chairmen M. P. Korneichuk
and O. I. Stepanets)
11. Operator Theory and Operator Differential Equations
(Co-chairmen Yu. M. Berezansky and M. L. Gorbachuk)
12. Topology and Geometry
(Co-chairmen O. A. Borisenko and V. V. Sharko)
Actively working mathematicians are invited to participate
in the Congress in order to exchange recent advances in
various branches of mathematics and to discuss open problems
and perspectives for future development.
Participants can give a 30-minute talk in one of the above
sections.
Moreover, there are plans to conduct satellite conferences,
where scientific presentations can be communicated.
Information on these conferences will be available later.
Registration
All interested in participating in the Congress are invited
to register by January 31, 2001 in one of the following ways:

* filling in the enclosed registration form and sending
it to the Organizing Committee by regular mail or fax.
The participants are highly encouraged to inform the
Organizing Committee about their intended participation
in the Congress as soon as possible.
The registration fee is 70 USD and to be paid upon the
arrival at the Congress.
Abstracts
The participants should submit abstracts of their talks
before August 1, 2001. The abstract must not exceed one
A4 page.
The working languages at the Congress are Ukrainian,
Russian, and English.
