The MRC Institute of Hearing Research (IHR) needs from time-to-time
to supplement its capacity in data analysis, at the level of at least
MSc in Medical or Bio-statistics plus 1 year's experience (or
corresponding PhD study). The requirement arises from short-term
contract work of an applied nature supplementing IHR's long-term core
scientific programme, work which often has short deadlines. The
nature of the work typically involves teasing out appropriate
descriptive parameters (derivation and transformation), summarising
the most influential variables in multivariate data sets and achieving
statistical control via general linear modelling. Current areas of
work include consultation patterns for middle ear disease in GP
activity databases, design and analysis of trials with multiple
outcome data, and trends over time, with and without interventions,
in quality of life measures, both in children and adults with hearing
difficulties. General information on IHR is at http://www.ihr.mrc.ac.uk
A range of statistical techniques is employed and high familiarity
with at least one of GLIM, SPSS or S-PLUS for the above uses would
be essential. Geographical proximity to Nottingham (e.g. less than
60 miles) for occasional visits is desirable. A variety of working
arrangements could be contemplated depending upon qualifications,
availability and amount of work desired. One such possibility is a
short-term staff appointment.
