An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and talented data/statistics
person to join the CESDI Secretariat which manages the Confidential
Enquiry into Stillbirths and Deaths in Infancy.
The successful applicant will be required to work closely with the 16
CESDI regional offices to ensure that national data is collected in a
timely and useful manner. Analysis of that data will be a key role. In
addition you will be expected to provide analytical and statistical
support to other members of the team.
You will possess a degree in a relevant subject and will have had two
years experience in the design, collection and analysis of routinely
collected data. The ability to work flexibly in a small team, as well as
a sense of humour is essential.

JOB DESCRIPTION
POST: DATA CO-ORDINATOR/INFORMATION ANALYST
CONTRACT: Full-time

THE ENQUIRY: The Confidential Enquiry was established for England Wales
and Northern Ireland in 1992, commencing data collection in 1993.
AIMS: The overall aim of the Confidential Enquiry is to improve
understanding of ways in which the risks of death in late fetal life and
infancy might be diminished, with particular regard to factors which are
avoidable with current knowledge, technology and resources.
The findings of the Confidential Enquiry guide the professionals in the
conduct of practice, teaching and training; help purchasers and service
providers in assessing and meeting the needs of populations and
Government in making policy. The findings also serve to help the public
understand its part in health care.
OBJECTIVES: The objectives of CESDI are:
· to identify and assess the factors associated with groups of fetal and
infant loss, especially those which are avoidable or in which care was
sub-optimal;
· to make recommendations to improve clinical care, service provision
and professional education and training;
· to make recommendations for research;
· to disseminate the findings of the Enquiry;
· to produce appropriate reports for professionals.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Chairman of the Maternal and Child Health Research
Consortium
LIAISON WITH: All Members of the Secretariat
Regional Co-ordinators
Lead Researchers commissioned by the Executive Steering Group via the
Project Manager
Members of Working Groups
Statisticians in the Office for National Statistics, Department of
Health and the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland Office.
DUTIES: To co-ordinate the day to day collection of national statistics
through liaison with the Regional Co-ordinators, the Office for National
Statistics and the Secretariat
To analyse the data collected, produce tables and contribute to writing
reports.
To provide statistical advice to the Secretariat, Working Groups and to
Regional Co-ordinators on standards for data collection and analysis
To provide support and advice at meetings with interested parties
organised by the Secretariat on issues related to the design, collection
and analysis of data. This may include making presentations on related
topics.
To liaise with Regional Co-ordinators, receiving and replying to queries
in liaison with other team members, and keeping the Secretariat
up-to-date with Regional issues.
To contribute to the production of the Secretariat Update, and highlight
any other items of interest to Regional Co-ordinators, as a way of
maintaining and improving links between the Secretariat and Regions.
To advise, design and support special studies and Focus Groups for
specific topics within the CESDI remit
To assist the IT Specialist in his work, and in his absence provide
essential IT advice to the Secretariat and Regions, where possible.
CESDI is managed by the Maternal and Child Health Research Consortium
comprising of representatives from: The Royal College of Midwives; The
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists; The Royal College of
Paediatrics & Child Health and The Royal College of Pathologists.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS Educated to at least degree level in a relevant
subject.
EXPERIENCE At least two years experience in design and analysis of
studies involving routinely collected data and/or surveys
ATTRIBUTES Ability to co-ordinate the collection of large amounts of
data, and analyse this data using statistical and related software
Sound knowledge of statistical ideas and techniques and an ability to
communicate these ideas to non-statisticians
A good understanding of databases, particularly Access
Ability to present results and information in tabular and written form,
and at meetings.
Ability to deal with sensitive data, both quantitative and qualitative,
and to maintain confidentiality standards.
Use of standard word processing, spreadsheet and presentation packages,
preferably Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Good communication skills, and the ability to influence and motivate
others
Sense of humour and ability to work in a team.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS Masters level in statistics or quantitative
social science
EXPERIENCE Experience of surveys/research on a national basis and
preferably health related.
Some experience of case control studies would be an advantage
ATTRIBUTES Awareness of research methodology and knowledge of
questionnaire design
A knowledge of SPSS for Windows
Interest in women's and children's health
