and Department of Medicine
TWO MEDICAL STATISTICIANS
First, please note that an advertisement for these posts has appeared in New
Scientist.
Applications are invited for two posts within the University of Cambridge’s
Institute of Public Health. The first post is in association with the Bone
Research Group (Director, Dr Jonathan Reeve) in the Department of Medicine
and involves working on large cohort studies on osteoporosis and other
common diseases, and collaboration with other statisticians and
epidemiologists in Britain and Europe. The second is based within the Centre
for Applied Medical Statistics (CAMS) to provide statistical support to
clinical researchers within the University Clinical School or the NHS
Eastern Region. The main duties are to act as consultant or collaborator,
involving a wide variety of projects from design to analysis and
interpretation stages, meaning there is an attractive variety of people,
projects, disease areas and data sets to be encountered. Note that the first
post is also intended to have up to a 20% component in association with
CAMS. We seek individuals able to work in a multi-disciplinary team and
having excellent communication skills to be able to explain clearly
statistical concepts to clinicians.
Applicants should have a higher degree in (medical or applied) statistics
and interest or experience in consulting and collaborating. Both posts offer
excellent opportunities for personal development, including applied
methodological research, perhaps jointly with MRC Biostatistics Unit
statisticians, and the opportunity to be involved in teaching short courses.
Other activities within CAMS include occasional statistical reviewing of
papers submitted to The Lancet, as well as for other biomedical journals.
CAMS was established in 1996 in response to the increasingly recognised need
for high quality statistics within medical research. CAMS comprises a
Director (Dr Chris Palmer), three other full-time statisticians, a PhD
student and the Editorial Assistant for the journal Statistics in Medicine.
Appointment according to experience either at Research Assistant or Research
Associate level, for up to three years in the first instance, with salary
scale £16,286-£18,185 or £16,286-£24,479, respectively. Both can begin
immediately, although those completing graduate studies this academic year
are also invited to apply.
