Royal Statistical Society Ordinary Discussion Meeting
14 June 2000
National Statistics: vision and values
LEN COOK (Office for National Statistics), ROGER JOWELL (National
Centre for Social Research), EMILY GRUNDY (London School of Hygiene and
Tropical Medicine) & other speakers to be confirmed
Synopsis: National Statistics, which was formally launched on 7 June, is
the way in which the Government will implement its manifesto
commitment to improve the quality and the perceived quality of official
statistics. The meeting will concern the scope of National Statistics,
the Framework Document, which sets out the role of the National
Statistician, the new Statistics Commission and the draft code of
conduct for National Statistics. The keynote speaker will be Len Cook,
the first National Statistician, followed by several other discussants
with a close interest in official statistics.

Time and place: The meeting starts at 5pm on Wednesday 14
June (following the AGM at 4pm). The meeting takes place at the
Royal Statistical Society, 12 Errol Street, London EC1 (nearest
underground stations are Old Street, Moorgate and Barbican).

Discussion contributions: Contributions to the discussion are very
welcome. Anybody, whether or not a Fellow of the Society, is welcome to
contribute. Please contact Valerie Evans, PA to the Executive Secretary,
if you would like to make a contribution to the discussion immediately

to Valerie at the above address.) If you are unable to attend the meeting,
you may send a written contribution. The written version should not exceed
400 words in length. Written contributions can be sent for reading at the
meeting, or after the meeting for inclusion in the written discussion in
Series A of the Society's journal.
