A vacancy has arisen for a statistician at Long Ashton Research Station
(LARS), part of the Institute of Arable Crops Research (IACR) which
researches into all aspects of arable and other crops and their interaction
with the environment. The successful applicant will be a member of a small
group of statisticians who are responsible for statistical and mathematical
aspects of the research work at Long Ashton. S/he will work closely with
scientists at IACR-LARS, and will be an active contributor to the scientific
research programme with opportunities to apply a wide range of statistical
techniques. The Statistics Group is also part of the IACR Statistics
Department, based primarily at Rothamsted Experimental Station (IACR-RES),
which gives further opportunity for statistical collaboration and
development.
As well as general consultancy work, the job holder will be encouraged to
develop modelling and model-fitting skills (using non-linear regression) in
wide-ranging collaborative projects including spatio-temporal behaviour of
insects and plants, crop/weed competition studies and interactions between
mixtures of pesticides. Thus there will be excellent opportunities for
developing statistical and mathematical skills and applying them in a
practical context.
The Statistics Group is currently responsible for teaching a Statistics
module within an MSc course in Crop Protection based at Long Ashton and the
appointee will have opportunity to contribute to that teaching. S/he will
also have responsibility for the co-ordination of field plans and harvest
data analysis.
The appointment is for 2 years, at Band 7 level (salary range
£14,900-£17,000, non-contributory superannuation scheme and 25 days annual
leave).
The minimum qualification is a good honours degree in applied statistics, or
mathematical sciences with a strong statistical component, preferably with
an MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification in applied statistics.
Practical computing experience is essential, preferably within a PC
environment, with experience in the use of statistical packages such as
Genstat desirable. Good communication skills, both oral and written, are
required for this post.
