Public Seminar Series 2000
Wednesday 17 May, 5pm
Speaker: Dr Martin Bobak
Title: 'Alcohol & Mortality in Russia'
Venue: University College London
All welcome - RSVP essential
Abstract
Moderate regular alcohol intake has mostly been seen as protective against
cardiovascular disease. However, there is some evidence that episodic intake of large
amounts of alcohol (binge drinking) may not be protective but may increase the risk of
cardiovascular death. It has been suggested that binge drinking is common in Russia,
and that alcohol, and binge drinking in particular, contribute substantially to the
dramatic fluctuations in Russian mortality rates. To date, there have been no reliable
data available on trends of alcohol consumption or on the effects of alcohol on
cardiovascular mortality in Russia. In the seminar, the above question(s) will be
addressed by analysing two types of data from the MONICA Project:-
i) trends in binge drinking in Novosibirsk, Russia between 1985 and 1995 (the period
of major mortality changes), and
ii) results from a cohort study of binge drinking and cardiovascular mortality in
Novosibirsk.
Martin Bobak is senior lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health,
University College London. His work is focussed on health in Central and Eastern
Europe and the former Soviet Union, and includes studies of social, psychosocial,
dietary, life-style and environmental determinants of health. Dr Bobak’s research is
supported by the Wellcome Trust.
