Design and Analysis of Cluster Randomised Trials
8-9 June, 2000
Imperial College School of Medicine, London
***************************************************************************
A 2-day short course is offered at Imperial College in collaboration
with the MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge. The course is aimed at
statisticians as well as non statistical health services researchers. In
this 2-day
course, the second day is optional, catering for those interested in
more advanced statistical methodology related to cluster randomised trials.
Course teachers:
---------------------------
Professor Simon Thompson (Cambridge and Imperial College)
Professor Mike Campbell (University of Sheffield)
Dr. Diana Elbourne (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine)
Dr. Rumana Omar (Imperial College)
Obi Ukoumunne (Imperial College)
Rebecca Turner (Imperial College)
Julie Barber (Imperial College)
Topics covered on the first day:
--------------------------------------------------
Introduction: Need for cluster randomisation, basic design issues
Health and Technology Assessment review and recommendations
Paper critique based on recent publications on cluster randomised trials
in medical journals
Sample size calculation and conventional methods of statistical analysis
Database of intracluster correlation coefficients (ICC) for various health
outcomes
Ethics in cluster randomised trials
Topics covered on the second day:
--------------------------------------------------------
Matched design for cluster randomised trials and analysis
Issues in economic evaluation
Assessing intervention effects - cluster specific vs. population average
interpretation
Statistical models - classical multilevel models and marginal models based
on generalised estimating equations, with computer demonstration
Bayesian modelling and the role of ICC, with computer demonstration
Panel discussion on specific problems presented by the participants
A fee of £200 will be charged for the entire course which includes lunch and
course notes. A reduced fee of £100 will be charged for those wishing to
